The seven actions
The seven actions are based on experience and on reading performance-related content and research. Each one comes with steps for you to apply.
- 1
Define what you actually value
Goals built on what you care about hold motivation for the long term — Deci and Ryan’s research on self-determination.
- 2
Build your performance philosophy
The principles you commit to regardless of circumstances: how you operate, written down.
- 3
Set goals that connect to your values
Specific, challenging goals tied to something meaningful outperform vague targets — Locke and Latham’s goal research.
- 4
Prepare properly for the moments that matter
A structured routine before high-stakes moments, from Cotterill’s research on pre-performance preparation.
- 5
Develop deliberately in what matters most
Practice at the edge of your current capability, with feedback — Ericsson’s research on how expertise is built.
- 6
Review your progress structurally, not emotionally
The quality of your review separates people who develop from people who plateau.
- 7
Define who you are when you perform
Change anchored in identity outlasts change anchored in targets — Dweck’s research on mindset.
Nothing in them is sport-specific. The traits that drive elite performance are universal human qualities, and the actions are written that way: the same seven apply in sport, in business and in any field where consistent performance matters. Each exercise is a structured task with numbered prompts that produces a written output you can use and return to.
How to work with them
Read through them and make notes to develop the understanding behind each one, then begin to implement it into your daily thoughts, behaviours and actions. The aim is to get them embedded so they add to what you do and stand up as part of your process.
The point is turning what you have learned into how you operate. Consistent application and setting high standards over time is what produces change.
